CINCINNATI -- When deciding to host a welcome home event open to the public this year, the Reds decided to think outside the box.
In doing so, they dispensed with the rubber chicken dinners or autograph stampedes and will instead get their vaudeville on. The result is "Reds Un-Cut," which will be an all-ages welcome live variety event, to be held on Sunday night at the Aronoff Center for the Arts downtown. Every member of the 25-man roster, coaching staff and the club's broadcasters will be participating.
"What we like to say is it's Redsfest main stage meets 'Saturday Night Live,' because it's going to be a more ambitious program than Redsfest," said Charley Frank, the executive director of the Reds Community Fund. "Hopefully we'll have a lot of that levity, a lot of that laughter and a lot of the ease between the players that you see at Redsfest. But it will be more polished."
Bronson Arroyo is set to perform at 'Reds Un-Cut' on Sunday at the Aronoff Center for the Arts. (AP)Tickets prices for "Reds Un-Cut" start at $25, and all proceeds benefit youth baseball programs of the Reds Community Fund. It begins at 7 p.m. ET, with doors opening at 6 p.m. That pre-show hour will feature a red carpet player arrival televised locally by FOX-19 television.
Included in the 90-minute variety show will be a player question and answer session hosted by radio icon Marty Brennaman, comedy bits, a musical prelude, a coaches roundtable hosted by TV analyst Chris Welsh, team introductions, a performance by Reds pitcher Bronson Arroyo and guitarist Ben Lapps and, yes, game shows.
"Reds Feud," a takeoff of the popular "Family Feud" show, and "Reds Name That Tune" will be hosted by Reds TV pregame host Jim Day, who will no doubt be relying on his years of experience watching episodes of "Hollywood Squares" and "Match Game '75."
All attendees will receive a "Playball," rather than a "Playbill," and can use the time before the show to partake in hors d'oeuvres and a cash bar.
The genesis of "Reds Un-Cut" came as the club was seeking a jewel event to alternate with the Reds Hall of Fame gala, which is held every other year. The timing of the night can tap into fan enthusiasm for the club that often surrounds the start of the season -- especially coming off Cincinnati's playoff berth last season. The Reds front office also got some ideas from the Red Sox, who used some game show elements in some recent welcome home events.
The show will be produced by Shane Williams of Prestige AV, who ran the production of Redsfest's main stage and Phillip Myers, who helmed the Civil Rights Game Beacon Awards luncheon, Redsfest and the Hall of Fame gala. Expect a slick production with set pieces and backdrops appearing after the rise of the curtains.
Rehearsal time is limited since the players just returned this week from Spring Training, opened the season on Thursday and have games on Saturday and Sunday. There is another event booked at the Aronoff on Saturday night, which means setup for the Reds production won't start until Sunday morning. The show starts just a few hours after the series finale between the Reds and Brewers.
"There will be a bigness to it on the stage of the Aronoff Center, which is an incredible venue," Frank said. "I think they'll have fun with it."
