Bronson Arroyo admits he's not a morning person. He's struggled in day games throughout much of his career.
Sunday afternoon's series finale with the Giants began 40 minutes earlier than usual in order to accommodate the large crowd arriving for an annual Labor Day fireworks celebration on Cincinnati's riverfront.
But, despite the 12:35 p.m. ET start, Arroyo showed up prepared to pitch, and hit.
Arroyo allowed two runs on 10 hits in seven innings, doubled, stole a base, and had two RBIs, helping the Reds complete a three-game sweep of San Francisco with a 9-3 victory at sun-splashed Great American Ball Park.
"I didn't really feel that great," Arroyo said. "I've won some day games lately, but I don't know how. I was a little sluggish out there today. But, when we got up 6-2, I could see the finish line and my adrenaline started pumping. It was a good all-around game."
Joey Votto went 4-for-4 with four RBIs as the Reds swept the Giants for the first time since 2001.
The Reds have won three consecutive games for the first time since July 10-12.
