Bronson Arroyo gave the Reds six strong innings on the mound and one good swing at the plate
It was enough to send them on their way to a 6-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers Monday before a crowd of 24,706 on a hot, sticky night at Great American Ball Park.
The victory snapped a three-game losing streak and was only the second for the Reds in the last 10 games.
"Bronson gave us exactly what we needed," Reds manager Dusty Baker said. "He was dealing. He ran out of gas a little bit in the sixth. But he gave us what we needed. We needed that game badly."
Arroyo (10-8) went six innings, allowing one run on four hits. He walked two and struck out six. He won for the sixth time in his past seven decisions.
He drove in two runs with a double. The rookies, Joey Votto and Jay Bruce, each drove in two as well.
The Reds had no hits until Jolbert Cabrera singled with one out in the fifth. Milwaukee left-hander Manny Parra then walked Bruce and David Ross to load the bases.
That brought up Arroyo.
